Crashing and high memory usage
Wanted to see if others encounter this problem before I bother CS about it. (Plus I'll probably just give them a link to this post).
Under 32-bit Vista, PKO crashes pretty frequently on me and usually stays in memory. Task manager shows what happens if I don't manually kill each client after it has crashed and disappeared from the task bar (Game.exe is PKO):
It used to do this virtually every time I changed areas (IE, entered argent or the mines via walking, but not usually when I teleported). WoE has mostly fixed that, but now it just dies randomly, or refuses to come back after I tab to something else.
I have 3GB of RAM, so it's not a huge deal, but the crashing is annoying. Anyone else have this problem?

Re: Crashing and high memory usage
that's why it crashes cause there are many application files are open even if your memory is as high as that it will really crash... -.- 2-3 PKO application is enough why 5 ??? maybe the system won't read it already cause the system also need % of the processing

Re: Crashing and high memory usage
You had like so many clients on at the same time.. it'll definately bound to have crashes...
3GB aint alot.. hardcore users go up to 8GB these days and entry level is @ 4GB.

Re: Crashing and high memory usage
No, those aren't even open clients any more. Only the one using up CPU is actually open (at least in the sense of appearing in the taskbar). Even running one client, the game will die. When it does, the process stays in memory and, if I forget to manually kill it, the zombie'd processes build up over time...which is the entire point of the screenshot.

Re: Crashing and high memory usage
In that case your clients aint properly closed yet.. do a FORCE quit/shutdown to the remaining clients that're not in used.. because they're still internally sucking up your ram usuages, as you can see clearly from that screenshot of yours.

Re: Crashing and high memory usage
Um... yeah, I know. The point is that the game shouldn't be doing that. Hence the reason it's in the bug section of the forum. I know how to fix the problem when it occurs, it's just annoying.AlvinDj wrote:In that case your clients aint properly closed yet.. do a FORCE quit/shutdown to the remaining clients that're not in used.. because they're still internally sucking up your ram usuages, as you can see clearly from that screenshot of yours.
Get it now?
P.S. Side note, even as a computer science major, I can barely see any uses for 8GB of memory. Large scale photo/video editing perhaps, but even with 3GB I can load up 3 or 4 UT3 instances without having a page file at all. And seriously, who can play multiple FPSs at the same time? Random thought.

Re: Crashing and high memory usage
I wouldnt say its a bug because everyone else dont face this problem, otherwise there'd be heap loads of people complaining already..
And also did you upgrade to the latest GFX driver ? or any of your hardware drivers not updated to its latest ?
Perhaps it might also be your OS corrupted somehow? Try formating your OS and see if you still face the same problem ?
Just giving a few cents worth
Well.. I mentioned about your 3GB vs 4/8GB is because initially i thought u had THAT many clients running at the same time then that'd come in handy if not, of course it'll be kinda redundant having that much and btw yes, people do have multiple clients on at the same time, even up to even 9-10 clients on. Reason being they AFK their pets ? Setting up Stalls etc to name a few ?

Re: Crashing and high memory usage
I'm gonna say it's a bug, even if it's related to my configuration. I'm hoping the devs will ask for more detailed specs if they need them.AlvinDj wrote:I wouldnt say its a bug because everyone else dont face this problem, otherwise there'd be heap loads of people complaining already..
Latest graphics according to nVidia. Everything else should be updated as well.AlvinDj wrote:And also did you upgrade to the latest GFX driver ? or any of your hardware drivers not updated to its latest ?
Possible, I suppose. I'm pretty sure I've had the bug ever since my last wipe, but it's possible that the original failed.AlvinDj wrote:Perhaps it might also be your OS corrupted somehow? Try formating your OS and see if you still face the same problem ?
Thanks, I appreciate it. I've updated the original post to be a bit more clear as a result.AlvinDj wrote:Just giving a few cents worth

Re: Crashing and high memory usage
I seriously think you should backup your docs and do one final nice clean format of your current OS then re-update every single drivers to its latest and try again... see if the problem still occurs yea?
Do keep me updated after it

Re: Crashing and high memory usage
wa traherom!
im currently using windows vista and i am also experiencing that!
everytime i change location, window will hang and
later will say Not Responding..
soi need to end process 1 by 1 on task manager.
i thought i was the only 1 having trouble w/ that thinking that its my pc's prob..
i think pko's not compatible, playing on vista..
way back, when we're still using Windows XP, it works well & i can even open 4clients, w/o any window hanging (but ofcourse its a bit lag ->
but not super lag.)

Re: Crashing and high memory usage
when i was back in home town, i got similar problems too but with Windows XP.
forgot the specs already, since i do not play pko as much when i'm in hometown (yay, PS2).
well, will update on this when i got myself on the keyboard of that PC at around July...
But, since Window XP will face it too so why not tell the maintenance crew to have a look on this matter? You know, maybe to come up with a general solution...like a patch would help?

Re: Crashing and high memory usage
Update on this problem: Mische suggested I try removing all the MP3s from the game and I haven't had a crash since! You can keep the wav files, so you'll still get sound effects, you just lose the background music. (Which, admittedly, I had turned all the way down anyway.)
